"This prevents friction during intercourse that can lead to skin abrasions and a genital rash," Glashofer said.

"More importantly, pubic hair serves as a protection against bacteria and other pathogens," Glashofer continued.

Then, why the shape of pubic hair curls? Director of the Institute of Men's Health at Jersey Urology Group, USA Brian Steixner explains that hair can twist because of its task as a pheromone trap, which is secreted from the sweat glands around the crotch area.

Most pubic hairs also grow between half an inch to 1.5 inches. Every hair follicle in the body is genetically programmed to have different growth cycles and affect hair length. Hair from the pubic area has been biologically programmed to grow only to a certain length.
